The Amazing Story behind how I moved from financial failure and total burnout to love coming to the office and becoming one of the most profitable endodontists in the country…..  

………….. this all occurred after I got something in the mail!

Hawai2[1].jpgOne of the hardest things for endodontists to do is to achieve balance with their practice and family while learning how to enjoy the adventures of life. Most of us find ourselves working too many days and too many hours so that we come home exhausted and do not have time for our family or even time for ourselves.  What would it feel like to just work three days a week and take off 6 to 10 weeks a year and make more than you are now. What we would it feel like to have a stress free office and come home each night from work refreshed and energize.  It took me a lot of pain to figure out this secret but I would like to share this story with you.  


How my dream practice turned into a nightmare

CD%20Sem1[1].gifMy story: After over 20 years in the military, I decided to open my dream practice in Olympia, Washington.  I visited over 25 of the top endodontic offices in the United States to carefully learn the best, from the best, and incorporate their ideas into my new practice.  Finally, after months of planning, my dream was a reality.  I had designed a small but nice 650 square foot, 3-chair office.  I hired a great staff and started working 5 days a week.  The patient flow was immediate and plentiful.  I was seeing 22 patients a day but only completing 3 to 4 cases. All that work and no production.  Things were going great.

 

Then…..What seemed like overnight….. I was ready to quit dentistry!

The stress was too much.  I was killing my staff and myself.  I decided to cut down to 4 days a week and hired a hygienist that could give anesthetic and do build-ups, thinking that it would relieve stress.  No such luck!  I still found myself seeing between 15-25 patients a day.  The office pressure and stress continued to build to the point that I literally hated to go into the office.   

Through all of this, I took good care of my staff and I gave them good salaries and other benefits.  However, there was one staff member who was a real taker and was affecting the entire team.  Despite my giving, she kept asking for more and more and was turning the staff against me. There was increased bickering among the staff.  Every time I had a group meeting I felt it was "the time to attack the doctor" hour. 

Then I got something in the mail that changed my life......Finally, the pain was too much!  I decided that I didn't want to practice like this any more.  By coincidence, I received an audiotape in the mail that changed my life and provided me with the direction that I needed to create the practice I have always wanted. 

After listening to the tape, I sat down and wrote the Vision of what I wanted in my practice and my life.  I canceled my patients for a week, let 6 of my 7 staff members go, brought in a local practice consultant and took responsibility and control of the direction of my practice. 

As I started the task of rebuilding my new dream office, I knew I needed to address the business aspect of the practice.  This was an area that I had paid little attention to but was the main source of all the stress.  With the help of the practice consultant, I was shocked to learn that my front office records were a disaster.  I had no checks and balances in place and had to rely on someone else to provide me with the day to day practice numbers. Even though I thought I had the best accountant in town, I found that my office manager had failed to pay over 9 months of payroll taxes.  Many other bills weren't paid.  My electricity was scheduled for turn-off and my life insurance policy had been canceled.  Statements hadn't been sent out to patients in over a year. Therefore, I had over $250,000 in accounts receivable over 90 days, of which I ended up collecting only 20% minus the 35% to the collection agency.  If I knew what I know now, I could have collected over 90% without using a collection agency. 

With my Vision as the foundation, I started to rebuild my practice.  I carefully hired an incredible staff that believed in me and wanted to be part of my new Vision. More importantly, I learned to be a better leader and completely learned and understood my office systems so that I couldcomfortably delegate everything but the dentistry to my staff.   I developed my own office management system that would ensure that I had a handle on all aspects of the business side of the practice.  I developed a scheduling system that allowed me to change over to one-appointment endodontics, focusing on fewer patients and completing more cases while improving customer service.  The day after I changed my schedule, my production immediately went up over $1000 per day. 

Within a year, I brought in a part-time associate and was able to cut down to working 3 days a week.  By doing this,  I now had free time for family, personal freedom and all the good things in life.  I began to truly experience peace and joy.  I work in a stress free environment, have incredible referring doctors that keep my days full with routine cases, enjoy high net profit and take a lot of vacation time............How is this possible?   Read on........

What would it feel like to have one-on-one time with each of your children to truly connect with each other?  This is all possible when you work 120 to 150 days a year.  Take two weeks off to travel with one or two of your children, to Australia and then to Papua New Guinea and spent a week scuba diving off a 120 foot dive boat. There are endless possibilities to expand your relationships and to live the adventure of life while we are still healthy to do so. In between dives, take the opportunity to talk one-on-one and get to know each other better

What would it feel like to be totally debt-free (no student loans, no mortgage or car payments and no credit card debt), and have enough money put away in safe investments so you no longer ever have to think about working again?
    This is when work really becomes fun.  With my practice management model, it usually takes those in my coaching program 7 to 10 years to become totally debt-free and financially free.  They have so much excess money from their practice that they can donate heavily to charities while still putting away $10,000-$20,000 monthly for their future. 

Any endodontist can do this if they have the right systems, practice model and coach.

Learn from the Best

Talk about learning from the best . . .  I have visited the offices of over 25 of the best endodontists in our field such as Steve Cohen, Richard Burns, Steve Buchanan, John West, Joe Camp, John McSpadden, Denny Southard, Manny Weisman and many more. I spent at least two days in each office, studying every aspect of their practices. As these are all great teachers, they readily shared everything they knew.  I then applied what I learned to my own practice but failed to focus in on the business side. 

Over the past 15 years, I've tried everything to understand and learn the business of endodontics. I have listened to every tape put out by every major practice consultant and have had three consultants come in at different times to coach me in my office. 

Now don't get me wrong. There are some fine coaches out there, but they are not endodontists.They have a purely theoretical approach and don't understand  the specific tricks of what really works in an efficient endodontic office on a day to day basis.  It's more than keeping track of the numbers.  It's how the office team works together to make each day a productive one.  Onlysomeone who lives this each day, truly understands it and can share it with others.  When it's all working, the increased fun,  profitability and personal freedom is the true report card. In other words, production is the end, not the means.

Based on all that I assimilated from these various resources and thousands of dollars spent, I have since developed an endodontic specific model for my office that provides an atmosphere that is fun, treatment quality based, efficient and profitable. Over the last 10 plus years, while teaching my Endodontic Practice Mastery course, I have worked with over 400 endodontists. To teach is to learn and what I learned from these offices has helped me refine my model and accelerated my ability to figure out what works and what doesn't work. 

When I initially started my Coaching Program, I was completing 8 treatments a day (if you consistently complete 7 treatments per day you are in the top 10% of all endodontists), but now I do even more per day in less time with even less stress than before. By the way, our primary focus in the practice is on quality endodontics, customer service, having fun and enjoying the practice.  The production in our office is the result of the office flowing around me versus me allowing the office and the schedule to control my day.

It has always taken me a longer time to learn something than most people. Therefore,  I have to go through each step of the learning process. This deliberate process enables me to understand the problems you have because, at one time, I had the same problems and had to figure out the solutions.  I have to admit that the pain of learning does lock in the lesson but it would be much better not to have to go through the pain to learn the lesson.  This is what a Coach is for and all great athletes have coaches.

The main thing I learned when I started my endodontic practice is that I didn't know what I didn't know.
